9th International Workshop on Combinations of Intelligent Methods and Applications (CIMA 2021)
The combination of different intelligent methods is a very active research area in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The aim is to create integrated or hybrid methods that benefit from each of their components. It is generally believed that complex problems can be easier solved with such integrated or hybrid methods. Some of the existing efforts combine what are called soft computing methods (fuzzy logic, neural networks and evolutionary algorithms) either among themselves or with more traditional AI technologies such as logic and rules. Another stream of efforts integrates case-based reasoning and machine learning with soft computing and traditional AI methods. Yet another integrates agent-based approaches with logic and non-symbolic approaches. Some of the combinations have been quite important and have been more extensively used, like neuro-symbolic methods, neuro-fuzzy methods and methods combining rule-based and case-based reasoning. However, there are other combinations that are still under investigation, such as those related to semantic web and deep learning as well as to swarm intelligence algorithms. In some cases, combinations are based on first principles, but in most cases, they are created in the context of specific applications.
Smart Tourism
Tourism industry not only adopts information and communication technologies (ICT) but it is technology that determines the competitiveness and innovation of tourism organisations and destinations. The field of eTourism, as the intersection between ICT and Tourism, has evolved in various stages; the age of informations systems, the web 1.0 era and the age of web portals, the age of social media and finally the age of social, smart and mobile. The term Smart Tourism embraces various technologies, like the Internet of Things, 5G, mobile devices, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, robotics, aiming to bring a new era in Tourism. The crisis of the pandemic COVID-19 demands to reassess and redesign the concept of Smart Tourism and explore the challenges and opportunities of this new reality. The focus of this special session is on how ICT can support Tourism Industry to address the post-COVID-19 era challenges and how Smart Tourism will evolve. This workshop seeks to bring together researchers, practitioners and tourism industry’s stakeholders to discuss and share their ideas, contributions, practical challenges encountered and solutions in the field of smart tourism. The aim of this workshop is to present the vision and set future directions for smart destinations, smart experiences and smart businesses in the tourism industry.
Special Session
Big Data Analytics in the Energy Sector
The constantly increasing momentum of big data, and the increasing adoption of leading-edge information and communication technologies, constitutes an unprecedented market opportunity for improving energy efficiency and management. More specifically, the building sector and its lifecycle, power networks, smart grids and energy systems are sectors that are expected to take advantage of these technologies, aiming to improved operations and efficiency and providing added value for all the stakeholders.
With the rising availability of large datasets, being generated in every layer of the value chain in buildings and energy systems, new applications and services that will maximise energy efficiency and performance will be deployed. Hence, new methodologies and techniques are needed, in order to develop holistic applications that incorporate these emerging technologies and facilitate the transition into this digitised solutions environment.
In this context, this Special Session will focus on highlighting applications and cases that make use of data and appropriate techniques for the decision support of energy stakeholders, such as network operators, utilities, energy suppliers, building managers, investors and financiers, local and regional authorities, policy makers towards energy efficiency goals, through the use of the latest technology.
This session is also based on the research activities of the H2020 MATRYCS (http://matrycs.eu/) and BD4NRG (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/232358/en) projects.
6th International Workshop on Mobile Hypermedia applications for culture
Nowadays, the technological advancement in mobile devices has made possible the development of hypermedia and web applications that exploit their features. A potential application domain for mobile devices is applications for culture and related fields. Such applications may be shared, commented and further reused under other circumstances through the spatial interface environment of mobile devices. Various mobile devices may be exploited ranging from small smartphones to large tablets in combination with large displays or other projectors. Applications’ scope may regard the management and preparation of cultural content and processes including museum management, archaeological excavations and cultural events and its dissemination in archaeological sites, museums, cultural organizations and sites via augmented reality, navigation, voice commands and other related features. Furthermore, secure mechanisms for the distribution and commercial exploitation of multimedia cultural content in mobile devices should be taken into consideration along with the exploitation of web 2.0 applications and social media in general. Finally, educational multimedia applications and games may further present and disseminate multimedia cultural content through mobile devices inside and outside of classroom.
