TRAVEL INFORMATION
By plane
Catania (CTA) is the largest and busiest airport, with domestic flights to most parts of Italy, some international routes and many charter flights.
Palermo (PMO) is the second biggest airport, with a good range of domestic flights and international budget flights.
Trapani (TPS) is the third airport with a recent increase of traffic thanks to the low-cost Ryanair.
Comiso Airport (CIY) is a new airport that used to be a military airport and since its re-opening for commercial aviation, it is served mostly by low-cost and charter flights.
By train
Sicily is linked to the main Italian train network at Messina. Long distance trains from Naples (9 hours journey and if booked early the ticket costs around €40, one way), Rome (11,5 hours journey – ticket €50), and Milano (15 hours journey – ticket €120) cross the Straits of Messina by railferry and continue on to Palermo.
By boat
Across the Straits of Messina, there are at least hourly ferries between Messina on Sicily and Villa San Giovanni on the mainland. Also, large, cruise-ferries link Palermo with Civitavecchia, Naples, Genoa, Livorno, Sardinia and other Mediterranean destinations. If you drive a car, you can also drive on-board the BLUVIA rail/train ferries. There are also several hydrofoils each day between Messina and Reggio di Calabria.
